Professor at Tokyo University of Science/ Professor Emeritus at The University of Tokyo, working on chemistry and biology of “chirality” (left-right asymmetry). L’Oreal UNESCO Women in Science 2013, foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. B.Sc., Chemistry, 1970, Ochanomizu University; Ph.D., Chemistry, 1975, the University of Tokyo. Eleven years of research/education experience in England (King’s College London etc). Returned to Japan in 1986, and became a full professor at the University of Tokyo in 1992, first in the field of natural sciences. After the mandatory age-limit retirement, moved to Tokyo University of Science. Involved in administration at universities, science policy, science communications, capacity building and gender equality as well, e.g., International Council for Science (ICSU), Council of Science and Technology Policy (CSTP) Japan, Scientific Advisory Board to the UN Secretary General. Recently appointed as Ambassador of WINDS (Women’s Initiative in Developing STEM Career).
